English IV AP Lang.
If you're enrolled in English IV AP Lang for the 2019-2020 school year you're in the right place. Below you will find our summer reading novel and corresponding assignments. This will be due when the school year begins in the fall.
Welcome to AP Language and Composition, a course designed to be the equivalent in rigor of a college course in rhetoric, literature studies, and composition. The focus of AP Language and Composition is intensive analysis of rhetoric in nonfiction. This focus on nonfiction will require students to recognize rhetorical, stylistic, and literary devices and strategies that can be used to enhance their own writing. Special attention in this course will be devoted to preparing students for the AP Language and Composition examination, which tests student’s reading and writing abilities by asking them to recognize and analyze how an author shapes a piece of writing to serve the overall purpose or theme.
We're reading A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaining guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in). |
